Purpose of Position
The Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse authorised to function autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended clinical role within the Drug and Alcohol Service (D&AS;). The role:
includes focused assessment and management of patients using advanced knowledge and skills which may include but not limited to, ordering diagnostics investigations, prescribing medications and direct referral of patients to other health professionals;
is grounded in the nursing professions values, knowledge, theories and practice and provides innovative and flexible health care that complements other health providers. The scope of practice is determined by the context within which the Nurse Practitioner is authorised to practice.
provides leadership that facilitates the ongoing development of clinical practice utilizing research in provision and development of education programs, clinical services planning and development of clinical practice standards.
is regarded as the senior Nursing Clinician and Resource person for the D&AS; and works closely with the Service Manager, Nurse Unit Managers, Nurse Educator and Director of the D&AS; in relation to provision of a high standard of care for patients.
manages and cares for patients, utilising a model of care that is appropriate, timely and of high quality which is governed by developed guidelines.

Selection Criteria
1. Registered Nurse (Division 1) with AHPRA and tertiary qualifications in drug and alcohol. 2. Authorisation by AHPRA to practice as a Nurse Practitioner. 3. Advanced nursing skills in drug and alcohol and extensive experience in acute drug and alcohol nursing of patients with complex medical/surgical/mental health and social needs / issues across a variety of clinical settings. 4. Demonstrated ability and experience to deliver a range of evidence based contemporary counselling interventions in the drug and alcohol field. 5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and computer skills. 6. Demonstrated skills in clinical teaching and experience in research and evaluation of professional practice or willingness to develop same. 7. Current driver’s licence. 8. Demonstrated understanding of evidence based practice and contribution to best practice models of care/principles.
